Rebuilding Your Confidence in the Saddle

Rebuilding Your confidence in the Saddle

I’m going to just assume that because you are reading this, confidence, or the lack thereof, has become a theme in your riding.  If so, you are in good company.  Unfortunately lost confidence is an all too common issue for a lot of riders.

I say ‘lost’ confidence, because there seems to be an extra challenge in losing your confidence, as opposed to not having any to begin with.  Losing your confidence means that at some point you experienced horse riding without anxiety.  You felt the pure pleasure derived from just being in the saddle.  That ‘oneness’ when horse and rider are just moving together in harmony.

But then ‘that’ happened.  Your ‘that’ will be different from other riders ‘that’.  What is ‘that’?  ‘that’ is the catalyst that changed everything for you.  It might have been a one-time event, such as a fall or bolt.  It may have been something that built slowly, simmered away so to speak, before finally boiling over – and we all know that once it boils over, things are never the same afterward, are they?  Or ‘that’ might just be the story you have been telling yourself, which has somehow become a part of your reality now…

Regardless of what ‘that’ is for you, the sting in the tail is that you know how good riding can be, how good you can be, if you could only get things back on track.  And it is often that sense of loss that is the most frustrating, maddening and often heartbreaking part of losing your confidence in the saddle.

However, you CAN get it back.   In fact, you can begin right now – this moment today – turning things around and rebuilding your confidence, inch by inch.

Will it be easy?  No, probably not, but the fact that you are still reading means that it is important for you.  Important enough to do the work, put a little effort in, and to have all those lovely experiences again when riding your horse.

    What can you control?

Let’s start by becoming very clear on what you CAN control.  Once you have identified those, you are going to shift your focus to doing just that – controlling what you can, rather than what you can’t.

You can control how your body works in the saddle.  Working on your fitness levels, first and foremost.  Know that when you ask your body to do something, it can do it.  Things like applying clear aids, maintaining its own balance, suppleness to move with the energy underneath you when riding…  (You can join the FREE 30 Day Rider Fitness Challenge HERE)

You can also control your thoughts… Pretty simple when written down, however I know that this is as easy as it sounds. Visualise daily what you want your riding to look and feel like.

If you find any anxiety creeping into your ‘daydreams’, simply dismount and get comfortable again.

A lot of confidence issues stem from what we ‘think might happen’, so rather focus on what you want to happen.  Consistent purposeful thinking and keeping a journal will definitely help you with making this a habit.

Rebuilding Your Confidence in the Saddle

    What do you really want?

Make sure that what you are trying to do is what you really want to do…  Sometimes a lack of confidence can be traced to an increase in ‘common sense’ that comes with getting older and more mature.

Worried about falling off while galloping across country?  Do you really need to gallop across country any more?  Would you not be happy trotting on a trail?  Cantering over a hill?

Maybe, maybe not – but either way, make sure that your lack of confidence is not a symptom of growing up and having responsibilities…!

Do you have the right partner?

From here, finding the right horse is ESSENTIAL to building your confidence.   If your confidence issues are centered around your own horse, is there another horse you can use for a while?  Perhaps a riding school horse or a lease horse?

You need a horse you can trust.  A horse that will pick up the slack when you have moments of doubt, which will inevitably happen.  A horse who will work with you, rather than against you.

Start small and build a strong foundation

If you can, start small – really small – with basic groundwork.  This way you can set up your boundaries with the horse while working in a way that you feel in control (there is a 4 part, step-by-step, series on groundwork in Daily Strides Premium if you are interested in this HERE).

There are many things such as pressure and release that you can first implement on the ground before transferring over to later in the saddle. I have written a blog post on this topic HERE

Invest your time in your comfort zone

From here, I would suggest doing only what you are comfortable with – and finding a sympathetic but confident person to help you get back into the saddle.  This could look like just riding a circuit of a round pen in walk while being led.   Or it might look like sectioning off a 20m x 20m piece of an arena or field.  Whatever allows you feel like you are in control and can cope.

I think there are certain situations where ‘just do it’ helps, however I have yet to find a rider where this approach yielded long-term results when it comes to rebuilding confidence.

Rather stick to what you feel comfortable with, and begin to ‘train’ yourself to ride without any anxiety.  From here, slowly (literally inch by inch) stick your toe out of the comfort zone for short periods, but where you know that you can instantly return to whats comfortable if necessary.

REBUILDING YOUR CONFIDENCE IN TEH SADDLE

Give yourself time & the Confidence Collection

However, if you choose to being rebuilding your confidence, having the right resources there to support you is vital.  Time is one of the most essential factors that is most overlooked.  This WILL take time.  You probably don’t want to hear that, but having realistic expectations is another essential component of this rebuilding process.

Another resource you could use is the ‘Confidence Collection’ inside of Daily Strides Premium.  It contains audio programs to listen to either in or out of the saddle that will help you better understand different aspects of riding – and rebuild your confidence, step by step.  You can join Daily Strides Premium HERE

Whatever you decide to do, please do something.  I wish you nothing but the best going forward from here and getting back in the saddle.

Please remember to not rush this process; you are doing this for you.  Take all the time you need to make sure it is an enjoyable experience; that is the reason you want to ride, anxiety free, in the first place.

    Happy riding

Day 12 ~ SfS 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge

Strides for Success 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge Day 12

The final day of our challenge – and today I want you to turn your attention back to yourself and your horse.  We are so close to the end of the year I want you to have a think about where you are right now.  Is this where you thought you would be 12 months ago?  Did you reach your goals?  Keep your resolutions?

Where would you like to be this day next year?  More specifically, I want you to think about your riding and your horse.  When you get to this day next year, what do you want to be able to have written about 2017?

What do you want your word for 2017 to be?

Today  for the final day of the SfS 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge, Day 12, I want you to set your number 1 equestrian related goal for 2017.

Will it be to do with your riding?  Perhaps it will be based on your horse, or where your horse lives.  Maybe it will have something to do with equipment or tack.  It might relate to competitions or qualifications…

Whatever goal you choose, please make sure it is ‘do-able’ for you.  That your current circumstances support and will allow you to pursue this goal.  Time and finances are two of the biggest factors when considering if it is the right goal for you.  Also your family and work.

Once you have chosen your goal, post it online making sure you use the hashtags for us to follow along.

And finally, because this challenge is about what you can do to help others, I urge you to take a look around and see who you can help achieve their goal.

Is there someone at the barn that you can support?  Perhaps there is someone you can mentor?  Maybe there is a rider who needs someone to video them?  Or who could ride an extra day a week of someone tacked their horse up for them…

When you have identified a rider you feel you can assist, approach them and offer your services.  If they take you up on it, fantastic!  If they don’t, well no hard feelings!

As with the previous days, here are the hashtags you can use when posting your goal…

    #Sfs12DaysOfChristmas #12DayChristmasEquestrianChallenge #MakeEveryRideGreat #30DayRiderFitnessChallenge #EquestrianChristmas #PayingItForward #FitforRiding #RidingforWellness #EquestrianLifestyle #ChristmasChallenge #SfSChristmasChallengeDay1

Thank you so much for taking part in the challenge… If you have been following along via email, look out for an email from me on Tuesday 27th of December…

I hope you and your loved ones have a peaceful, blessed and happy Christmas
    Keep well

Day 11 ~ SfS 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge

Strides for Success 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge Day 11

The equestrian world is filled with ‘superstars’.  Horses and riders who inspire and motivate us to be better riders ourselves with their wonderful displays of horsemanship and talent.  They can be riders who have stayed top of their discipline for years on end, showing an almost superhuman level of commitment to their sport.

They can be riders who just have that ‘something’, a charisma of sorts.  The ability to make us feel like we are are riding along with them.  They can be riders who overcame the odds to climb to the top of pile.  Or riders who, day in and day out, are there working towards something…

Today, for Day 11 of the SfS 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge, I want you to thank the horse & rider combination who most inspires you.

Most riders nowadays have a presence on social media, so jump on there and find them.  Then, remembering to include their handles so they will see your post, share a line or two thanking them and mentioning WHY you think they are so fantastic.

Tell them how they have and continue to positively impact your riding or horsemanship.  What it is about them that you admire to much; and perhaps aspire to.

Also, because this is all about horses, Tell them which of their horses is your favourite and why…

Once you have done this, as always, use the hashtags below so we can also follow along and see who your vote is for when it comes to greatest ‘horse and rider’ combination :)

Day 10 ~ SfS 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge

Strides for Success 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge Day 10

Its such a pity that Christmas only comes once a year… However, imagine if we could make a little of the magic stretch throughout the coming year as well?  As our Challenge nears an end, I want to begin turning your thoughts towards 2017.  However, I want you to start thinking of what you can do for others in the coming year, not yourself!

Today, for Day 10 of the SfS 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge, I want you to think long and hard about what you can incorporate into your life during 2017 that will benefit others – and more specifically – some horses.

Can you set up a monthly donation to your favourite charity?  Bring a young person horse riding once a month?  Maybe you can clean the stables at the barn every fortnight… Or treat your horse (and maybe another horse as well) to something they love once a month.

It doesn’t have to involve money and it also doesn’t  have to involve a lot of time. Maybe you can set a reminder in your diary to write or post a review or testimonial for one local equestrian business each month.  Or perhaps you can share a local charity’s fundraising activities with your friends and followers…

Just make sure that whatever you choose to continue on with in 2017 will suit your current lifestyle.  Don’t choose something that is unrealistic from a time or financial perspective.  Make sure it is something you can do – and will remember to do – during the coming year.

Once you have made your decision, let us know by posting online and using the hashtags below so we can follow you.

Is there a brand of equestrian related clothing or equipment that you just love.  Their products make you feel like a better rider when wear or use them..  Perhaps it is a particular saddle.  Or a clothing brand.  Maybe it is your boots or even your gloves…

Today, for Day 9 of the SfS 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge, post a big ‘thank you’ to your favourite brands on social media and tag them in the post

Find or take a photo of yourself using their products and include it in the post.  Let them know how much of an impact they are having on a daily basis in your ‘equestrian experience’.

Remember to include WHY you love their products so much.  Is it the comfort?  Perhaps the style? The ease of use? Or how they make you feel…

Share with us the brand, or brands, you love to use when with your horses.  Everyone loves to be told that what they are doing is making a difference, so remember to tag your favourite brand in your post and let them know.

Day 8 ~ SfS 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge

Strides for Success 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge Day 8

One of the greatest gifts you can give someone is planting the seed of possibility.  As equestrians, we need to be consistent in planting those seeds in younger generations.  Sparking the same passion for equines in a new generation of equestrians.

Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant
    ~ Robert Louis Stephenson

Unfortunately, in this busy world, introducing a young person to horses has many challenges.  It may be inconvenient from a time perspective.  There are many other rivals for children’s attentions.  Things like computer games, other sports, school projects.  However, at some point someone made the effort, against all the odds, and planted that seed with you…

So today, for Day 8 of the SfS 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge, your challenge is to introduce a young person to horses and ponies.

This could look like booking a horse riding lesson at a local riding school.  Perhaps you could bring them to visit your horse?  Or you can simply take a walk to where there is a field with a horse or pony in it and feed it a pick of grass over the gate. It might just be as simple as buying a ‘horse’ book, or renting one from the library.

Obviously not every child introduced to a horse will develop a life long love for them – but some will… and isn’t that what it’s all about?  Making the effort for the few who will take up the reins and continue loving and caring for our horses; after we are gone.

As adults we often underestimate the simple things, looking for needless ways to overcomplicate.  This almost always leads to doing nothing.  Rather try to see things through the eyes of a child, where the most basic interaction with a horse or pony will truly make their day. .

Share a photo of your ‘little person’ enjoying their time with horses and share it with the rest of us using the hashtags below…  Come on, this will take a little effort, but will yield huge returns :)
