Unfortunately, in this busy world, introducing a young person to horses has many challenges. It may be inconvenient from a time perspective. There are many other rivals for children’s attentions. Things like computer games, other sports, school projects. However, at some point someone made the effort, against all the odds, and planted that seed with you…
So today, for Day 8 of the SfS 12 Days of Christmas Equestrian Challenge, your challenge is to introduce a young person to horses and ponies.
This could look like booking a horse riding lesson at a local riding school. Perhaps you could bring them to visit your horse? Or you can simply take a walk to where there is a field with a horse or pony in it and feed it a pick of grass over the gate. It might just be as simple as buying a ‘horse’ book, or renting one from the library.
Obviously not every child introduced to a horse will develop a life long love for them – but some will… and isn’t that what it’s all about? Making the effort for the few who will take up the reins and continue loving and caring for our horses; after we are gone.
As adults we often underestimate the simple things, looking for needless ways to overcomplicate. This almost always leads to doing nothing. Rather try to see things through the eyes of a child, where the most basic interaction with a horse or pony will truly make their day. .
